Nicolas Bellavance-Lecompte is a contemporary design
specialist, architect and curator based in Milan. Nicolas’
commitment to collectible design drove him to co-found the
traveling showcase NOMAD held so far in Monaco and St.
Moritz, which has already established a strong and international
network of collectors, design patrons, strategic partners
and gallerists. He also co-founded Carwan Gallery in
Beirut, the first contemporary design gallery of the Middle
East, where he serves as Art Director. Nicolas has curated
more than fifty design exhibitions for private galleries,
museums and institutions.

CO-FOUNDER

Oeuffice was founded in 2011 as a collaboration with Jakub Zak. Oeuffice is a design studio with a focus on developing innovative objects of limited edition whose work has been exhibited internationally with various galleries including Phillips de Pury in London, R20th in New York, Carwan Gallery in Beirut, Dimore Gallery in Milan. Few pieces are also part of the MET MUSEUM permanent collection.

Samare is a Canadian-based studio. Samare produces its own portfolio of objects entirely handmade in Canada based on contemporary reinterpretations of indigenous crafts. Samare objects have been exhibited in many international exhibitions across Europe and North America and are part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts of Montreal.

INTERIOR DESIGNER

Complete renovation and furnishing of a private residence in the historical center of Milan. The intervention comprises large pivot mirror doors, rare marbles from Africa and Brazil, custom made furniture and works from Oeuffice and Carwan Gallery. Featured on T Magazine, AD France and Corriere della Sera.

SCENOGRAPHY

A special collaboration with the artist Thomas Demand brought to the realization of the work "Clearing" installed at the Venice Biennale in 2003 and then acquired by MoMA New York.Thomas Demand is known for making photographs of three-dimensional models that look like real images of rooms and other spaces, often sites loaded with social and political meanings. The most of his work requires the support of specific design and display skills.

Eight international designers were asked to produce a work while unaware of the context. The brief was maybe an anti-brief, asking to make something that doesn’t have to be anything. Without standard parameters, the project aims to emancipate the designer from notions of style, spatial specifications and project demands. The focus is on creating objects that are active and autonomous agents in their environment, not complementing a space, but impacting it in their own right. The exhibition is produced by 5VIE art+design. Carwan Gallery started as the first contemporary gallery in Beirut with the mission of internationalizing design in the Middle East. Founded together with the architect Pascale Wakim in 2010, the gallery commissions projects and exhibits limited-edition objects. Carwan gathers designers and organizations from all over the world to realise and exhibit projects in Lebanon and international design fairs/exhibitions in various museums and art centers.

Purple, turquoise, pink (brown along the edges) was the first curated exhibition in a private gallery of the Belgian collective Rotor. The exhibition at Carwan Gallery consisted of a collection of most unexpected specimens from industrial production to architectural materials passing by delicate political situations. A thoughtful and unique vision on various processes part of our everyday life, conceptual design works becoming discussion pieces.

COMMISSIONING CURATOR

Commission by Carwan Gallery of the 'Landscape Series' by designer India Mahdavi, with production sponsored by the Iznik Foundation. The series’ aesthetic derived from the designer’s personal investigation on color and abstract landscapes combined with the 16th century Ottoman tradition of fabricating quartz tiles. The project received wide international press coverage and has been exhibited in the art and design fairs in Basel, Hyères, Beirut, Dubai and New York.

Curated exhibition for the Mexico City Design Festival and Carwan Gallery of a special multimedia installation by Beirut-based architect Bernard Khoury entitled "C'était un rendez-vous", showcased in October 2013. The works presented in the multi-sensorial installation were a series of unedited short films depicting construction sites in Beirut and the route linking them to the architect's workshop.

COMMISSIONING CURATOR

"Gradient Mashrabiya" is an installation curated under the umbrella of Carwan Gallery. The duo of Austrian designers Mischer'Traxler was commissioned to collaborate with an expert woodworker in Lebanon to redefine the construction of traditional mashrabiyas. The result 'a sideboard' is composed of a network of more than 650 distinct pieces of manually carved wood. The project has been displayed in a live performance and installation during Design Days Dubai and Milan Design Week in 2012.

Curatorial project for FABRICA, the communication research center that is part of the Benetton Group. Carwan Gallery’s project involved international designers and Lebanese craftsmen in a cross-cultural initiative to realize a collection of objects developed in different phases, including a research week in Lebanon with 13 designers, a conference at the Academy of Fine Arts of Lebanon, workshops, the development of the project, and the exhibition at the National Museum of Beirut in December 2013.
